Why Your Car Paint Code May Not Be an Exact Match

by AL-Khan Paints 22 Sep 2026

Short answer: A vehicle paint code identifies the manufacturer’s original colour formula, but it does not always guarantee that freshly mixed paint will look identical to the paint currently on the vehicle. Sunlight, age, previous repairs, surface preparation, application technique, and the final clear coat can all affect the visible result.

Is the paint code still important?

Yes. The paint code is the best starting point because it identifies the original colour family and formula used for the vehicle. It is more reliable than choosing paint by a colour name or a phone photograph. If you do not know where to look, read our guide on how to find your vehicle paint code in Pakistan.

Why can the existing paint look different?

1. Sunlight and weather exposure

Paint can gradually fade or change after years of exposure to sunlight, heat, rain, washing, and environmental contamination. Panels that receive more sunlight may age differently from protected areas.

2. Previous repainting or repairs

A panel might have been repaired or repainted before, even when the rest of the vehicle still has its factory finish. The previous repair colour may be close to the original code without being visually identical.

3. Metallic, crystal, and effect finishes

Effect colours can appear lighter, darker, or slightly different depending on viewing angle, lighting, spray technique, and how the particles settle. This is why comparing only one photograph is not always reliable.

4. Primer, base surface, and clear coat

The colour underneath, the number of coats, and the type and condition of the clear coat can influence the final appearance. Surface preparation also affects how evenly the repair reflects light.

5. Application method

Spray distance, pressure, overlap, coat thickness, drying conditions, and polishing can change the visible finish. The same prepared colour can look different if applied under different conditions.

Can a phone photo be used for colour matching?

A photo can help identify the general colour, but it should not be treated as a precise colour reference. Camera processing, screen settings, shadows, and indoor or outdoor lighting can all change how the colour appears. The vehicle paint code, identification label, and a physical comparison are more dependable.

What should you provide for a better match?

  • The vehicle make, model, year, and variant
  • A clear photo of the manufacturer’s identification label
  • The complete vehicle paint code
  • Information about any previous repainting or panel repair
  • The actual vehicle or a suitable physical sample when professional comparison is needed

Does custom colour matching guarantee perfection?

Professional colour matching can improve the result, especially when existing paint has aged or a formula has variations, but no responsible supplier should promise a perfect visual match in every condition without considering the vehicle, surface, application, and finish. Larger or highly visible repairs may need a skilled painter to test and blend the colour into the surrounding area.
